Description
The Music-Instrumental Performance Degree is designed for the student desiring a performance career emphasizing a woodwind, brass, or percussion area. The typical student will follow this degree with graduate work in the concentration and/or pursue employment as a freelance musician. Individuals working towards a degree in Music Performance delve deeply into the repertoire of their field while performing in studio classes, junior and senior recitals, ensembles, and competitions. In addition to the general music core courses, students will study Applied Music, Literature/Repertoire, Pedagogy, and a variety of Special Topics. This degree consists of 126 credit hours.

1 | Applied Music must be studied each semester for a total of eight semesters. In the sixth semester of study, the student will present a junior recital. In the eighth semester of study, the student will present a senior recital. Students will have many performance opportunities prior to these recitals, performing in Concerts and Recitals and Studio Classes, as guided by their Applied Music instructor. All eight semesters of Applied Music are to be taken in the same instrument. |
2 | Every Music Performance student is encouraged to participate in as many ensembles as possible, each for one credit hour, since practical experience of this kind will prove invaluable to the student in their future careers. Each student is required to participate in a large ensemble representing his/her certification area (instrumental or vocal/choral). Students must participate in 12 required ensembles: six large and six small. Freshman and Sophomore students will take 100/200 level ensembles and Junior and Senior students will take 300/400 level ensembles. Large Vocal Ensembles are: MU 138 Gospel Choir (1), MU 338 Gospel Choir (1), MU 196 Chorus (1),MU 396 Chorus (1) and MU 218 A Cappella Choir (1), MU 418 A Cappella Choir (1). Large Instrumental Ensembles are (choose from at least two of the following): MU 132 Orchestra (1), MU 332 Orchestra (1) (strings only), MU 148 Wind Ensemble (1), MU 348 Wind Ensemble (1), MU 192 Marching Southerners (1), MU 392 Marching Southerners (1),MU 193 Chamber Winds (1), MU 393 Chamber Winds (1), MU 250 Symphonic Band (1) MU 450 Symphonic Band (1), and MU 279 Jazz Ensemble (1), MU 479 Jazz Ensemble (1) .
