The requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology are a minimum of 120 semester hours, meeting all university and program general education requirements, 30 semester hours of sociology coursework, and either a second major or minor. Of the 30 hours required for the Sociology major, 15 hours are dictated by the program, while the additional 15 hours are sociology electives.

Sociology majors must earn a minimum of “C” or better in each of the major and minor courses.
SY 221 Introduction to Sociology (3) or SY 222 Honors Introduction to Sociology (3) is a prerequisite for most sociology courses. SY 427 Classical Social Theory (3), SY 428 Contemporary Social Theory (3), and SY 499 Senior Sociology Seminar (WI) (3) have additional prerequisites. SY 301 Sociological Methods (WI) (3)and MS 204 Basic Statistics (3) should be taken prior to sociology 300+ electives. Students are urged to consult with their academic advisor who will be helpful in choosing electives. Students should balance breadth and depth as best suits their own needs and future plans.
