The department offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in Foreign Languages, with a concentration in Spanish, as well as minors in Spanish and French, for students not seeking teaching certification (with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree). The department also offers courses of study leading to teaching certification in the chosen language (see below).

Students with native or near-native language ability must contact the foreign languages department head to determine their proper placement in language courses. Students with previous foreign language experience may be exempted from any or all of the lower-level courses based on their placement test performance; however, the total credit hour requirement (36 hours in the language of concentration) must be fulfilled with other courses in the chosen language. Additionally, courses SH 101 Beginner's Spanish I (3), SH 102 Beginner's Spanish II (3), SH 201 Intermediate Spanish I (3), SH 202 Intermediate Spanish II (3) must be taken in sequence (unless the student is exempted by placement test or has instructor’s permission).
