1 | Individual applied music must be studied each semester for a total of six semesters. In the sixth and final semester of study, each student will present a public recital. To aid the student in preparing for this final project, the Department of Music offers a special seminar under the guidance of the applied music instructor. Normally, all six semesters should be taken in the same applied instrument (voice, piano, clarinet, etc.). In exceptional cases a change from one instrument to another may be permitted in the major area with the approval of the instructors involved and the department head, but in such cases the student will be expected to declare clearly what subject his/her major instrument is and to pass the junior seminar work in that instrument. |
2 | Two (2) ensembles/semester. Every music student is encouraged to participate in as many ensembles as possible, each for one credit hour, since practical experience of this kind will prove invaluable to the student in their future careers. Pianists are encouraged to choose large ensembles for both vocal and instrumental categories. Each student is required to participate in a large ensemble representing his/her certification area (instrumental or vocal/choral). Freshman and Sophomore students will take 100/200 level ensembles and Junior and Senior students will take 300/400 level ensembles. Large Vocal Ensembles are: MU 138 Gospel Choir (1), MU 338 Gospel Choir (1), MU 196 Chorus (1), MU 396 Chorus (1), MU 218 A Cappella Choir (1), and MU 418 A Cappella Choir (1). Large Instrumental Ensembles are (choose from at least two of the following): MU 132 Orchestra (1), MU 332 Orchestra (1) (strings only), MU 148 Wind Ensemble (1), MU 348 Wind Ensemble (1), MU 192 Marching Southerners (1), MU 392 Marching Southerners (1), MU 193 Chamber Winds (1), MU 393 Chamber Winds (1), MU 250 Symphonic Band (1), MU 450 Symphonic Band (1), MU 279 Jazz Ensemble (1), and MU 479 Jazz Ensemble (1). Small Vocal Ensembles are: MU 162 Chamber Singers (1), MU 362 Chamber Singers (1), MU 252 Lyric Theatre Workshop (1), MU 452 Lyric Theatre Workshop (1), MU 295 Show Choir (1), and MU 495 Show Choir (1). Deviations in the selection of the required ensembles must receive the written approval of the department head. |
